Make Rules You Are Happy to Follow

Many creative people do what everyone else is doing. How many YouTubers have some fancy lighting behind them? How many podcasters start their show with a jingle? How many newsletters have you received that say, “Your last chance to join! My thing is disappearing in 3 hours”?

We seem to follow rules dictated by others. I’m not immune to this. I’ve conformed too in the past and I’ll likely do it again in the future.

It’s a shame.

The beauty of a self-directed art project lies in the word “self-directed.” It might be a book, a podcast, a YouTube channel, a painting, or a business. Whatever it is, you’re the project manager and the CEO. You make the rules.

Make rules you’re happy to follow.

It’s a lesson I’m still trying to learn.
