Everything Is Questionable

"Time Management for Mortals"

Every time a stranger discovers I’m vegan, the first thing they’re quick to point out is that humans have been eating meat for thousands of years.

Of all the arguments a carnivore could use, I believe this is the most flawed.

The underlying assumption seems to be that established practices shouldn’t be questioned.

They should.

If someone hadn’t questioned some of those, today Black people would still be traveling in separate buses, and women wouldn’t be allowed to vote.

A few days ago, I had a different debate on LinkedIn with the owner of an English language school.

In a job ad she’d posted, she mentioned that they preferred English “mother tongue” teachers, to which I (and others) left comments questioning their employment policy.

The job poster replied, “We are a famous English school, and for our students, we prefer English mother tongue teachers. […] We are a large company that owns 500 centers all over the world, and I think you shouldn’t question our rules.”

Another flawed argument

This time, the underlying assumption is that the decisions of those who have achieved fame and success shouldn’t be questioned.

Really? How many politicians are famous and successful?

There’s nothing that can’t be questioned.

“Nothing” includes traditions, ancient philosophies, religions, your mom’s teachings, and, most importantly, your own thinking.
